Another center of the formations was the reduplicated present ἱ̄λάσκομαι \< *σι-σλᾰ́-σκομαι, of which the anlauting vowel-length was introduced in other forms: perf. subj. and opt. ἱλήκῃσι, ἱλήκοι for *εἱλ- (ind. *εἵληκα like εἴρηκα, τέ-τλη-κα), perh. also in ἵλᾰθι, - τε and Hom. ἵληθι (cf. εἵληθι H.), (or from *σι-σλη-θι). Also in the aorist- and future-forms ἱλάσ(σ)ασθαι, ἱλάξασθαι, ἱλάσσομαι, ἱλάξομαι the length was introduced; beside it there is short in ἱλάσσεαι (Α 147), ἱλασσάμενοι (Α 100), ἵλαμαι (h. The short ῐ- which is ununderstandable, may replace the ε- ( ἑλάειρα [s. above], *ἕλαμαι, *ἑλαρός) after ἱλάσκομαι. - Also ἵληϜος, ἵλεως, ἵλᾰος from reduplicated *σι-σλη-, σι-σλᾰ-. The old ablaut selǝ-: sleh₁-: slǝ- (cf. telǝ-: tlā-: tlǝ- in τελα-μών: ἔ-τλᾱ-ν: τέ-τλᾰ-θι) of which sla- is analog. - More on the Greek forms (after Froehde a. a. O., Solmsen KZ 29, 350f., Schulze Q. 466f., Bechtel Lex. 175ff., Wackernagel Unt. 81) in Schwyzer 281, 681, 689 w. n. 2, 710, 800 etc., Chantr. Gramm. hom. 1, 13; 22; 299; 427 etc. - Fundamental is Klingenschmitt, MSS 28 (1970) 75-88, who showed that Arm. aɫač`em `pray' \< *slh₂-ske\/o- is the closest relative. Ant. 153); also in ἐλελί-σφακος, - ον s. v.Etymology: In the aorist forms ἐλέλιξα, ἐλελίχθην two verbs seem to have merged: 1. a reduplic. present ἐλελίζω `shake'; 2. an augmented *ἐ-Ϝέλιξα with the present (Ϝ)ελίσσω `turn' (s. v. ἔλιξ). The preterite ἐλέλικτο refers to a snake in Λ 39 and belongs therefore as *ϜεϜέλικτο `twisted itself' to 2; the expression ἔγχος... σειόμενον ἐλέλικτο Ν 558 can as well represent the turning or whirling as the shaking movement. It is no longer possible to distinguish the two. Cf. Chantr. (m.) `beam of light, (air)mirage' (cf. μαρί̄-λη, *μαρι̯α \> μαῖρα?). Though accepted by Mayrhofer ( KEWA 2, 589, EWAia 2, 321), the connection must be rejected, as Greek μαρ- cannot be explained in this comparison (it is an old comparison, from the time when *a was not a problem; Pok. 733 writes simply * mer-). Further suppositions (Lat. merus `unmixed, pure', also mare `sea' ?, OE ā-merian `purify, taste', Russ. mar `ardour of the sun' etc.), cf. WP. 2, 273f., Pok. 733, W.-Hofmann s. merus, Vasmer s. mar are also most doubtful. - The reduplication μαρ-μαρ- is hardly IE. ᾽Αμαρυγή has a prothetic vowel, which is typical of Pre-Greek (as is the suffix - υγ-). Positing a root pele- meaning `turn' however, is based on a wrong analysis of πόλος, πάλιν (s. rather πέλομαι); so only the meaning `fold' remains (s. ἁπλόος). Similarly Worms Herm. 81, 31 n. 2: prop. `geschwungen, gewunden', to πάλλω, from where `zackig, sich schlangelnd, zerklüftet'(?). With this interpretation of παιπαλόεις one separates παιπάλη from it and connects it as a separate word to πάλη `flour' (s.v.) and πόλτος etc. -- Others connect παιπαλόεις as `floury, dusty' (first of roads) with παιπάλη; s. Leumann Hom. Wörter 236 ff. with extensive argumentation and rich lit. He considers παιπάλη `subtle talker' not as metapher of παιπάλη `fine flour' but explains it from πολυ-παίπαλος. -- Still diff.
